For a cubic lattice, the Miller indices of a plane can be calculated as the cross-product of the two vectors in the plane (Similar to zone axis determined by cross-product). However, this scheme does not work in noncubic lattices because (hkl) plane is not perpendicular to the [hkl] direction in the noncubic crystals. For instance, the [101] direction is not perpendicular to the (101) plane in a hexagonal lattice. Therefore, in a noncubic crystal we cannot use a cross product to calculate the Miller indices of a specific plane.
