Both thermoelectric coolers and mechanical refrigerators are governed by the same fundamental laws of thermodynamics. Some Si (Li) EDS detectors use mechanical cooling, also called Peltier cooling, instead of the liquid nitrogen (liquid-N2). This type of coolers eliminates the large cryostat and avoids the requirement to keep it full. However, the temperature reached with Peltier refrigerators is not as low as that obtained with liquid-N2, affecting the energy resolution of the detector.
