Until recently, the application of Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) for investigating surface plasmon resonances in the optical regime has been extremely limited by its energy resolution. In the proximity of the intense zero loss (0 eV) peak in the spectrum, it is essentially difficult to extract information below 4 eV of energy loss. For instance, gold nanoparticles have a surface plasmon energy of approximately 1 eV.
