| Once holes (lack of electrons) are created by primary electron excitations at the initial electronic levels, in a very short time (< 10-15 s), these holes can be filled by electrons occupying higher levels in the energy diagram, resulting in various emissions: photon and phonon as well as Auger electron emissions.
