For a cubic lattice, the Miller indices of a plane can be calculated as the crossproduct of the two vectors in the plane (Similar to zone axis determined by crossproduct). However, this scheme does not work in noncubic lattices because (hkl) plane is not perpendicular to the [hkl] direction in the noncubic crystals. For instance, the [101] direction is not perpendicular to the (101) plane in a hexagonal lattice. Therefore, in a noncubic crystal we cannot use a cross product to calculate the Miller indices of a specific plane.
