Each atom or ion in any given molecule or crystal structure will be surrounded by other atoms or ions. The number of atoms or ions that immediately surround an atom or ion of interest is called the coordination number (CN).

If all of the atoms in a crystal are the same size, the maximum number of atoms that are coordinated around any individual is 12 (also called 12-fold coordination).
