During the growth stage of dislocation loops, all the sizes of the loops increase so that the total number of interstitials bound by dislocation loops increases. The coarsening stage of the loops starts after the growth stage, and thus the number of dislocation loops decreases and the average loop size increases. The coarsening stage of dislocation loops is also so-called Ostwald ripening.
