The column of a high voltage microscope (e.g. high voltage TEMs) is actually an X-ray tube. Radiation can be emitted from apertures, liners and any other surfaces that are struck by the incident electron beam. In most operating conditions with a total beam current of a few µA, enough shielding is provided by the amount of copper and iron in the lenses and it is only needed for the designer to ensure that other parts (such as the specimen chamber and camera) have thick enough walls.
