From intermetallics, the metallic elements in such materials have unequal electronegativities so that their lattices have lower electron densities than metals. Therefore, electron depletion may occur at the boundary and would also reduce the boundary's cohesive strength.

In polycrystalline ceramics, grain boundaries usually act as barriers for the cross-transport of charges. Due to the segregation of charged cations, a strong reduction of the leakage current across the boundaries is induced by the space charge depletion region.
