The concept of dislocation node where multiple dislocations meet can be used to describe the dislocation characteristics. The conservation of the Burgers vector at dislocation nodes is called Frank’s rule, named after F.C. Frank.  Similar to the Kirchoff’s law describing that the total current flowing into a node is zero, when the direction of the sense vectors is selected to point into the nodes the Franks rule can be given by,

This rule has many applications in the dislocation analysis. For instance, this rule can be used to evaluate the character of a dislocation connected to a node if the characters of the other dislocations connected to the same node have been determined already.
