The double salt, potassium sodium tartrate (NaKC4H4O6•4H2O), was first prepared by an apothecary, Pierre Seignette, of La Rochelle, France in ~1675. Because of this discovery, the salt was known as Seignette salt or Rochelle salt. Note that rochelle salt is not the same as rock salt.
