A family of parallel crystallographic planes all vertical to some particular line is called a zone, and the line is called zone axis. That is, the crystallographic direction, which is common to two or more planes, is called a zone, and the zone axis is considered as a direction common to the two or more planes.

For any plane (hkl) that belongs to the zone axis [u v w], the following relationship is satisfied:

         hu + kv + lw = 0 --------------------- [2968]
