Page4637 introduces the fundamental concepts about the X-ray (fluorescence) yield and weight induced by electron-beam irradiation. The probabilities of atomic electron transitions of X-ray generations are not identical. The relative intensities compared with the most intense line are called weights. Table 4672a gives the X-ray lines having the most significant weights. These weights are only important within a given K, L, or M family and do not relate other families, because each experimental condition, including the electron microscope and sample, affects X-ray generation in each family differently. The peaks of the X-ray families will appear in fixed ratios. If an X-ray line in an EDX spectrum is identified as the β or the γ line of an element, then a larger α line should also be present. Modern EDS software use some version of Table 4672a to scale all its line markers to the α lines. Table 4672b gives photon energies and relative intensities of K-, L-, and M-shell lines.
